Krewe of Attakapas

Established in 1968, the Krewe of Attakapas was the first women’s carnival krewe in Lafayette, Louisiana. At their initial ball, the Krewe favored their guests with the gifts of doubloons during the pageant…another first in Lafayette. The main purpose of organizing the Krewe was to honor men of the community who have devoted much of their time and talents in service to Lafayette, to Mardi Gras, and to the Krewe of Attakapas.

Because the three elements of fire, water, and sun play an important part in the lives of the Indians, we chose red, blue, and yellow as our colors to represent these elements.

The Krewe of Attakapas remains a “mystic” Krewe and will be celebrating its 55th Ball in 2024.
